Kheops station running and providing continuous data flows
Submitted by Sébastien Judenherc 03/07/2009 - 12:41
After the LSBB upgrade (read below), one more Kheops is operating in Calern (CALF). The station is connected to a STS-2 and an accelerometer. The SeedLink data flows are transmitted to GeoAzur and then to the Orfeus data center.  Data availability for the Kheops stations (RUSF_07 and CALF_00) can be checked online : http://www.orfeus-eu.org/Data-info/orbstats.html Waveforms from the recent Crete earthquake are also available from Orfeus (POND/2009/182/*2009.182.09.30.08.mseed) or using the AutoDRM running at GeoAzur.

Low noise antenna switched to Kheops and OMNI

Low noise antenna switched to Kheops and OMNI

The multiparameter antenna operated in the LSBB has been upgraded. Three Kheops stations replace Titan-IP digitizers and the remaining four Titan have been connected to Mykerinos-T to offer the Osiris interface.

Agecodagis has designed GPS hubs to dispatch the complete GPS signals (synchronization pulse and NMEA messages) to all the stations of the antenna over the optical fibers already in place. The common phase lock capability of the Osiris family stations allows the Kheops stations to synchronously digitize signals at the head frequency : no processing is needed to merge or correlate seismograms. The short term and long term time stability is better than 3µs.

Thanks to OMNI, the setup was extremely simple : the common setup was prepared using OMNI before the installation. Then during the installation, the only task was to associate each new station to an existing setup. OMNI was then in charge of synchronising the parameters.  Last minute changes decided during the setup wer simply performed using the OMNI interface. Then, the operating parameters of the digitizers were adjusted by OMNI.

The Kheops dataloggers are connected to STS-2 and PTU300 temperature and pressure probes.

The features used in OMNI for this setup include :
  • health monitoring (battery levels, internal temperature, external temperature and pressure, disk filling rate, time quality etc.)
  • configuration management (asynchronous parallel setup performed by OMNI),
  • interstation trigger, providing an quick automatic data selection and display based on the triggers of each station (standard windowing approach),
  • quick data selection/view based on a simple web based form.

The PC running OMNI also integrates a SeisComP server used as a hub by GeoAzur to distribute continuous SeedLink data flow via Orfeus and the local AutoDRM.

Moulis station disassembled, data available
Submitted by Sébastien Judenherc 17/06/2009 - 08:35

The Kheops station running at Moulis as a test site has been stopped. The MiniSEED data files for 1sps, 20sps and 100sps area vailable online.

A number of earthquakes have been recorded. Below is the vertical seismogram for the main shock in L'Aquila, followed by an earthquake in the Northern Pacific. Note how clear are the long period related to the tides.

The tides were clearly observed and a longer signal shows the typical 14-days modulation :

The quality of the site, the sensor and the digitizer make possible to clearly identify various diurnal and semidiurnal tides on the following spectrum (Equilibrium amplitudes for the tides are taken from Apel, 1987).

Although no large earthquake occurred at small distance, the 40Vpp input together with the large dynamic range would have allow to avoid clipping while still recording very low frequency and low amplitude signal.
